Big Beach Bright Lights

If you like it hot day and night, then try Patong Beach. The main beach is almost three kilometers long, and lies at the head of a very pretty bay formed by two peninsulas in the shape of a horseshoe. Hundreds of sun chairs are put in lines up to five rows deep along the beach. Vendors are everywhere. Finding a companion in the raucous nightlife in the city at the back is easy, and people who love the place stay up till after dawn. The only problem is, when do you get to sleep? Here are the Patong Beach five.

There isn't much space for anything else besides the rooms and the swimming pool, but this hotel has good style and taste. Pros & Cons. Little garden ambience, but the beach is a two minute walk down the street and across the beach road. Good quality rooms at a reasonable price.

This small resort enjoys a location directly on Phuket's famed Patong Beach - one of only two places that can boast. There is nothing between its cabanas and the voyeur's paradise on the beach to the front. There are restaurants, bars and souvenir shops along the streets in any direction a guest cares to walk from the front entrance of the hotel.

Located on a low rise at the north end of the beach, the hotel overlooks Patong to the south. The beach is down the steps past the terraced pools of the resort (about two minutes) and across the beach road. Pros & Cons: It is over a kilometer to the beginning of the nightlife strip, but this can be a very pleasant walk along the beach, or an easy Tuk Tuk ride from downtown late at night. What's a Tuk Tuk?

Tuk Tuk's are local three-wheeler taxis with a covered two-person passenger seat above the rear two wheel axle. The driver sits astride a moped style seat and controls the machine from handlebars at front. The noise these machines make is something like tuk..tuk..tuk.. about five times a second. This describes a Bangkok Tuk Tuk, hence the generic name for such small means of public transport.

In Phuket, however, Tuk Tuks are mostly four-wheel Daihatsu minivans. Open-sided covered passenger cabs containing two double-seats face each other behind the small driver's cab. Phuket's tuk tuk drivers have a bit of a reputation for price gouging given the opportunity, but this is not the place to go into that. For short rides from a restaurant or pub in downtown Patong, however, they are just fine at any time of night.

Though this property is quite small, guests are not only in the thick of the nightlife area, they also enjoy one of only two hotel locations with direct access onto the beach (ie there is no road to cross) on Patong. Pros & Cons: The property is a bit small, so rooms are not large, but heck, how much time do guests spend looking at the room rather than their partner or a movie on Satellite TV?

This one is right in the middle of everything. It has two pools and would qualify as a family hotel were it not for its location in Patong. The beach is just across the road from one of two main entrances, both of which give onto streets filled with restaurants, shops and bars.
